Is It Time To Repair Your Brakes?

Blog

Have you been having some issues with your brakes, and you are wondering if you should take your vehicle to an auto shop to have them repaired? It will help to know some of the common signs that your car needs brake repairs.

Squealing

Do you notice a squealing sound when you apply pressure to the brakes? This sound is actually intentional, and it is designed to let you know that your brake pads have deteriorated to the point where they need replacement.

There is actually a metal bar in the brake pad that is exposed when the thickness of the pad is reduced to a specific point. That bar then rubs against the metal part that presses against the brake pad to slow your car down, which creates that squealing sound. Since brake pad thickness cannot be measured and reported to your vehicle's dashboard, this is the best solution to let you know that the brake pads are significantly worn down.

Vibrating

You should also pay attention to any vibrations when you use the brakes since this is also a sign that something is wrong. Vibrations are typically a sign that your rotors are warped. This happens due to normal wear and tear since the metal rotors can get incredibly hot when applying the brakes and warp over time. It's a reason to be concerned since warped rotors will reduce the effectiveness of your brakes.

Grinding

Grinding is another sound you should pay attention to. It's an indication that something is wrong with the calipers and brake discs, which are rubbing together in a way that is not good. Your mechanic will inspect these two parts and repair or replace them if necessary. While you may have one set of calipers and brake discs that are rubbing the wrong way, you may discover that there are multiple sets that need repair.

Soft Pedal

Have you noticed that you are applying more pressure to the brake pedal to get your vehicle to stop? You are likely running into a problem with air within your brake lines or low brake fluid since the pedal is not giving you the resistance that the brake fluid provides. The brake lines will need to be inspected for a potential leak, fix the problem, and then replace the missing brake fluid.

These are only a few reasons why you may be having brake issues. Reach out to an auto shop or BMW brake repair service if you feel something is wrong with this important safety feature of your car.
